Microlending is "a form of financing that provides small amounts of money to typically very poor fledgling entrepreneurs to encourage self-sufficiency and to end poverty."
One of the most effective ways to end poverty is to provide access to capital that can be used to fund entreprenurial activities.
I look at microlending as part of my philanthropic portfolio, a vehicle that I use to help others. There are many microlending platforms, many provide a return to lenders. I chose KIVA because I wanted my investment dollars to provide the greatest possible benefit to borrowers. Charging interest to a borrower, that is struggling with daily expenses, was not of interest to me so all of my loans on KIVA are zero interest.
There are many lending options available on KIVA and if you are interested to learn more about this platform, click on the following link to read a post I wrote: Changing the World $25 at a Time Through Microlending
